Close But No Cigar

Last night we lost a 1 run ball game.  Those are always tough.  There were so many close calls in the game.  I was in most of them too.  First, one of my teammates hit a ball off the top of the wall in dead center early in the game just missing a homer.  The fence is 429 feet away!  That is a homerun anywhere else.  Another close call was when I threw the ball to second on a stolen base attempt and the guy was called safe before the ball even got there and the runner and my second baseman told me he was out!!  There was another close call involving me while I was hitting.  I hit a ball really high and really far to dead center and it almost went out but didn't quite have enough on it.  Once again, the fence is 429 feet away!!!  Homerun anywhere else but instead it was a just missed homer for me.  I'm ok with that though because my timing is coming around and I hit that ball pretty solid just a little under it so I can take some positive things away from that swing.  The last close call that involved me was a play at the plate.  There was a ball hit to the first baseman who threw the ball to me and I made the tag.  I felt my glove tag the runner on his wrist and all the way up his forearm.  Umpire yells "SAFE!".  The call was a little delayed and he was definitely wrong and I flipped out.  I asked him how he could possibly get a safe call on that play and he told me that he saw the guy's hand get under my left leg and touch the plate before I tagged him.  Wow, check that guy's eyes because he must have the best vision in the world.  There is no way he could have even seen that if it happened because he was positioned behind me with a terrible angle on the play.  That run ended up being the deciding run for them.

Although it was a tough loss for us I took some good things away from the loss.  I only got 1 hit, 1-5, but my timing on two of my at bats was perfect.  I felt great and I think I may have finally started to get that comfortable feeling in the box.  I am excited to get back out there tomorrow and play another game and continue that good feeling at the plate.  Behind the plate was a good game for me overall.  I was dissapointed in myself for allowing a ball to get by me, my first passed ball of the year, but I was very pleased with my throws.  I threw out 3 guys, one at each base.  And all my throws were accurate and strong.  Throwing people out is huge for a catcher especially when you aren't hitting like you should.  At least you are contributing on defense.

I am really proud of all the guys I worked with this off season.  I continue to get texts from parents and kids telling me how great they are doing and that is always so great to hear!  Keep up the good work guys!!!

Today is another off day for me so I am about to go eat some sushi.  I can't wait. I haven't had sushi for a while and I absolutely love it.  I might end up getting a boat all to myself.
